Thymus vulgaris is a well known herb. Technically a sub-shrub, because it only has woody basal stems, the top growth never really becomes woody. It is low growing, evergreen and has small, fragrant, dark green leaves. In early summer, clusters of small flowers are produced. The flower colour can vary, being purple, pink or white. Thymus vulgaris would be a good choice for a wildlife garden because the flowers attract bees. Varieties of thyme are also popular for growing between paving stones and along path edges.
