The mallow group of plants belong in the Family Malvaceae. The flowers are similar to those of Hollyhocks. Usually pink, the flowers are produced for long periods throughout summer. The shrubs in the Genus grow vigourously but they are often short-lived. The shrub types flower on new wood and should be pruned hard back in spring, pruning every shoot down to the last visible leaves at the base. It will respond very well to such vigorous pruning and produce loads of flowers.
The annual species and cultivars are a good source of cut flowers.
