spongey tomatoes!

Postby Lucy » 13 Aug 2007 18:45

Hi there

I have grown two types of tomato this year - gardeners delight and marmande. I THINK I grew marmande last year and they were delicious - big, deep red and irregular with really tomatoey juicy flesh and thin skins.

Not so this year - they are pale and spongey inside and NOT nice to eat. I am making tomato chutney with them instead so far!

Any ideas what has happened, and is there anything I can do to remedy the situation?

Thanks so much

Hi Lucy,

Sorry not to have got back to you before on this one. The only reason I can think of for the condition of these tomatoes is the weather. Are they being grown outside? If they are, I suspect the excessive wet weather we have had could have overwatered your tomatoes and the lack of sun does not help the ripening process either.
