Plants for the shade.

Postby Garry Allan » 09 Jul 2007 12:47

Advice for novice gardener please. What plants / shrubs are best recommended for the shade? Area is about 6' x 3' at front of house, adjacent to house wall, and gets virtually zero sunshine. Something ideally evergreen through winter and flowers / colour spring / summer.

Thanks

Hello Garry,

Thanks for your question to www.plantadvice.co.uk.

Here is a list of evergreen plants suitable for shade for you to work from. Hope it helps.

Ajuga varieties
Aucuba varieties
Berberis darwinii
Bergenia varieties
Mahonia varieties
Viburnum davidii
Liriope muscari
Hellborus varieties

If the soil is acidic (low pH) or you would consider growing plants in pots in that area you could also use:

Pieris varieties
Camellia varieties
Rhododendron varieties

(You would need to purchase ericaceous compost if growing these in pots)

Brilliant, many thanks for that. I'll check them out and get something to my liking no doubt.

Thanks again.
