Yucca pruning

My yucca elephantipes has reached the ceiling and there is nowhere higher indoors. I don't want to have it outside in winter. How can I prune it, please..... does it require sawing/cutting through at the base of the leaves where the trunk is brown or is it possible to prune higher up amongst the leaves ? This plant has leaves which run 3/4 of the way down the stem so any prune at the base would leave a thick bare trunk some 18" high. I have never pruned it in 5 years and only pulled off the lowest leaves.

I have a similar houseplant that grew to the ceiling and we lopped off the top 2 feet and it's grown back quite happily. Whether a Yucca would respond as well I don't know, although plants are designed to survive.

If you look at a typical Yucca the leaves sprout from a cut off trunk at the bottom, so I would suspect something similar would happen at the top if you were to attack it with a saw...
